Officers are urging people in Sheffield to be vigilant following two incidents in which a group of men have reportedly tried to con elderly residents out of large amounts of cash.
The first incident occurred on Tuesday 14 January, when a group of three or four men approached the home of a 87-year-old man in High Greave, Ecclesfield between 12 and 2.30pm. They asked if he wanted his gutters cleaning, saying it would cost £20. They then advised his roof needed repairing at a cost of £2,000.
The victim went to the post office to withdraw additional cash and handed over £1,500. The men said they would return the next day for the other £500. No work has been done and the men did not return.
The men are described as wearing blue uniforms and were driving a white van with ladders.
In the second incident, on Thursday 16 January, a 67-year-old man from West Quadrant, Firth Park went to the post office to withdraw £1,000. When concerned staff challenged him, he said the money was to pay for some work being done on his drive. Officers attended his address to do a ‘safe and well’ check. The builders had gone and had left no contact details. Had any work been done?
The men were all described as having Irish accents.
Sergeant Scott Sarson said: “While there are differences in these incidents, we are treating them as potentially linked and would urge residents to report any similar incidents to us.
“Please be vigilant and be mindful of anyone offering to do work who does not seem genuine. If you have elderly friends of relatives who you think could be vulnerable to incidents like this, please talk to them and ask them to call us to report anything suspicious.”
