Ecclesfield Library – Forthcoming Events

Event: VE day 70th anniversary celebration, to include a 1940s display; demonstration of 1940s dancing; sketches/readings; music; raffle; quiz; cake stall; refreshments.

When: Saturday 16 May, 18.00-21.00 at Ecclesfield Library.

Help requested:

· Putting up bunting both outside and inside the library.

· Moving bookshelves and furniture, setting up tables and displays.

· Someone to organise a raffle.

· People to sell raffle tickets.

· Someone to co-ordinate the cake stall – organise bakers, sell on the day

· People to help with refreshments both serving on the day itself, and beforehand to “commission” cakes etc.

· People to meet and greet and keep an eye on the display items.

· Keyholder(s) to open up and close down the building.

· People able to turn their hands to anything else that is bound to crop up!

Event: Mad Hatter’s Tea Party – to celebrate 150th anniversary of the publication of Alice in Wonderland. To be held on the village green, outside the Church.

When: during the afternoon of either Tues 28 or Thurs 30 July.

Arrangements are very much at an early stage; it will depend on how much help is available with planning beforehand, and helping on the day.

We’ll need to provide tables, chairs, children’s party food and drink, refreshments for the adults, information/activities e.g.face painting Alice characters?/talk about Alice in W and readings from the book; help with setting up, serving refreshments, supervising children (and possibly adults!), clearing up.

Also advance publicity, encouragement for people to come as a character/in costume; copies of the book itself (any version); baking cakes; raffle with Alice in Wonderland-focussed prizes?; what else….?

How the north ward pots were spent this year

Each year the ward councillors across the city are given a ward pot. This is to spend on local projects to help improve the community. As well as giving grants to many community groups to help them keep up their great work, some specific projects were funded through the ward pot.

This year the Stannington Ward Councillors supported the Friends of Stannington Library to take on running the library.

In the West Ecclesfield Ward the Councillors chose to fund Activity Sheffield to run summer activities in the area.

A pilot project to get befriending volunteers linked to lunch clubs was set up in the East Ecclesfield Ward.

And in Stocksbridge the Steel Valley Project was giving funding to help them take on and support extra volunteers.

We are a group of final year students for the University of Sheffield and are currently undertaking a module in which we need to develop an idea for a social enterprise, which would operate with the aim of keeping Ecclesfield library open.
